How can I give black coloured metal ornaments a rusty antique look?

They are candle holders but they are black and I want them to match the room they are in. The colours in the room are beige and burgundy and the furniture are of a dark oak colour, all of wood. I don’t know if those details make any difference because I’ve never decorated any thing, I’m hoping to make this my first project ever.

you can get some sand paper and sand it just a little, get the lightest one though nd once you sanded it till you liked it you can finished it with some clear varnish to make it look glossy.

get some acrylic rust colored paint (comes in small bottles for about 1 dollar). apply to the black candlesticks with a sponge. make sure the sponge barely has any paint on it–pat it a few times on something first to get rid of excess. then just lightly dab the surface of the candlestick randomly. do not press too hard. the rusty paint will only touch the higher surfaces, leaving the black in the crevices and the lower areas.

Craft store all sell “patina” chemicals. Find out what the black metal is and purchase the proper one, or use the sponging technique.
